Every kitchen is unique in its approach; hence every kitchen type is the right type of kitchen. Kitchen is the heart of the home and also the most used space in our house, here are eight things one should keep in mind while designing their modular kitchen.

  • Define your kitchen layout

As per your space and available area, identify which layout would be suitable for your kitchen. If it’s a small kitchen, one can go for a straight or parallel kitchen. The most common modular kitchen layout is L shape or U shape. If there is enough space in the kitchen area, one can also go for an Island Kitchen layout.

  • The kitchen work triangle

The kitchen work triangle also known as the golden triangle rule is a time tested best way to design a kitchen. It’s a guideline that states that the three main work areas of the kitchen should form a triangle for efficient work space. The three legs of the triangle connect the cooking stove, kitchen sink and the refrigerator.

  • Identifying your storage requirements

Figure out your usage pattern. Are you a hoarder who likes to stock their groceries and supplies for weeks or months? Hence you’d like to use every centimeter of the space available. The usage pattern will help you identify if you need more drawers, cabinets, shelf cabinets or tall units.

  • Cabinet materials

The major problem Indians face while going for a modular kitchen is that there is no quality control, hence no way to check the quality of material used in your kitchen There is no rock solid solution, one has to be aware and make sure to check with your designer/carpenter about the material they are going to use. The best material available for modular kitchen is BWP (Boiling water Proof) and BWR (Boiling water resistant) grade Plywood. Out of the two materials, BWP grade is widely used where water contact is expected. BWR is equally good and is little cheaper than BWP graded.

  • Fittings and Fixtures

Identify important electrical and plumbing points before initiating work in your kitchen. Identify the area to provide outlet for exhaust fan, core cutting for the kitchen chimney and PNG gas connection if available.
